Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC)

What is the Canadian Adult Education Credential? 

The Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) is a high-quality, made-in-Canada education credential that meets industry standards as a replacement for the General Educational Development, or GED® in Canada. Employers, post-secondary institutions, and others can count on the CAEC as a reliable indicator of Canadian adults’ level of educational achievement. 
 
Alberta Education is leading the development of the Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC). In Alberta, this new credential will replace the General Educational Development, or GED®, which will no longer be available in Canada after May 3, 2024.  The CAEC will provide a high-quality, made-in-Canada education credential that meets industry standards as a replacement for the GED®. Employers, post-secondary institutions and others in Alberta will be able to count on the CAEC as a reliable indicator of adults’ level of educational achievement. 

Who is the CAEC for?

The CAEC is for adults who do not have a high school diploma but need an education credential to open new doors to educational or employment opportunities or as an academic achievement indicator. 

What does the CAEC cover?

Developed with input from a provincial-territorial working group, employers and post-secondary institutions, the CAEC will be tailored to the needs of adults and will reflect diverse cultures and perspectives. Delivered on an easy-to-use online platform, tests will be available in English and French in the following subject areas: English and French and consists of tests on Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science.

Who is eligible for the CAEC?

In Alberta, the CAEC is available to individuals who: 
> have not completed high school, 
> are nineteen (19) years of age, and 
> are residents of the province. 

What if you have an incomplete GED®?

Students who have passed some of the GED® tests will be able to apply to Alberta Education to have the tests recognized toward their CAEC for three years up to May 2027. 

Will the GED® still be recognized in Alberta after the CAEC is introduced?

Will the GED® still be recognized after the CAEC is introduced?

Yes, the GED® credential will continue to be recognized as valid. In addition to recognizing the new CAEC, employers can continue to recognize the GED® for individuals who have attained that credential.
