Experiencing different cultures, people, food and religion can be wonderful. It can be very different from reading it in a book. Making the decision to leave your native country can be easy if you made the choice, or very painful if the choice is made for you. Most time children are never involved in the decision-making process and they are left with the scar and trauma of abruptly leaving friends, families and loved ones. Once immigrants arrive in their new country, some are surprised by the ?culture shock? and sometimes the change in the temperature and climate.

Some of them do not speak the language and are not educated in both languages, others are educated and very qualified, but they do not understand the language or the way of life. This problem can create isolation for many immigrants. Some feel helpless, resentful, depressed, and anxious as they navigate their way in the new environment. They want to be involved, but they don?t have the confidence to take the first step. They are also very cautious about doing things because they do not want to be humiliated or make a mistake. It is good for the parent of school-aged children to get involved with their school community because some schools will provide interrupters to help them. The local libraries and the immigrant centres also have information and basic English classes to make the settlement easier. Professionals can find private schools and institutions to help with English classes. These classes will be tailored to meet their needs. There are many services for immigrant children at school and through local organizations.

Immigration can be difficult for everyone involved. Parents and children may be grieving in different ways. They must spend time together and help support each other. If they become overwhelmed there are many organizations that will provide free counselling for low-income families. This can be a very traumatic time for everyone involved. Now we have the problem of being isolated at home and having to learn the rules of the country and the new isolation rules. This is the time for friends and neighbours to help each other even if we cannot leave the house. We can leave some grocery on the doorstep and call them if you know the phone number,  If you have problems contacting help within Calgary area, please contact me and I will give you the contact information to the agencies that will help you.
