Most adults will spend more time with their coworkers than their family or significant other. The workplace can be a great place, or it can be a source of stress for many. Why is it so difficult for us to get along with each other? We must understand that some people come to work with negative emotions such as envy, greed, anxiety, fear, unhealthy competition and so on. We must be mentally and physically prepared for work every day. Once we know who we are dealing with, there should be no surprises.

Remember that

  1. No one can make you happy or sad unless you gave them permission to do so

  2. You can choose how to respond to any situation

  3. You are in control of your emotions in every situation

  4. You must make choices that will benefit you and once you are in a better place the people around you may have no choice but to accept you. They will realize that you will not ?buy? into this emotional struggle.

If you are working in a stressful situation, you must be mentally prepared before you go to work.

  1. Wake up early

  2. Have a good breakfast

  3. Do some form of relaxation or mindfulness exercise

  4. Meditate or pray if you are a person of faith (read something from your holy book)

  5. Listen to uplifting music

  6. Have some positive saying on your mirror or say it to yourself. Today, I will choose how people treat me. I will not allow anyone to steal my joy and the list can go on.

  7. Believe what you say to yourself and do what you believe.

  8. Learn to see people for who they are ? you do not know their stories.

  9. Do not judge people ? you do not know them even if you have worked with them for the past 20 years.

  10. Be positive and always check yourself ? does your facial expression match your feeling ? have an inviting expression and show them that you care.

  11. Take responsibility for your part of the situation

  12. Don?t blame others always look within ? if you want to change others you must first change yourself.

  13. Don?t gossip about others and keep your word. Don?t tell others what someone asks you to keep to yourself (secrets).

  14. Don?t be too proud to ask for help.

  15. Don?t tell anyone anything that you are not comfortable to hear it from the people involved.

  16. Keep your personal life away from everyone at work ? only if you have a friend at work.

  17. Take advantage of an employee assistance plan (counselor or psychologist) if you have personal or any issue that is overwhelming.

  18. Don?t play the victim, always look for an opportunity to improve your behavior and your work habits.

Your goal at work is to do your best work and be happy doing it. You must try to love and show compassion to others and forgive all past problems. Give others the opportunity to change after you have changed your actions, behavior, and emotions. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

People are placed in our lives to make us grow. Every encounter on earth is a lesson. The experience of itself is never a bad one; it is what we do with it that will determine the outcome of the situation. Holding a grudge, being resentful or blaming others will never be beneficial to your life. They will rob you of learning in all situations. Everyone you encounter on your journey of life has a purpose in your life. Learn to be open and see the purpose as we interact with each other.
